As we bid adieu to another sweltering summer, Los Angeles is gearing up for its most anticipated art event of the year – LUMINEX. This electrifying outdoor digital exhibition has been
illuminating the streets of downtown LA since 2022, and I’m thrilled to report that it’s back in 2024, bigger and brighter than ever!
LUMINEX is the brainchild of NOW Art, a trailblazing public art agency that’s been redefining the urban landscape with its innovative approach to art, architecture, technology, and culture. This pioneering initiative has captured the hearts of Angelenos and visitors alike, showcasing a diverse range of talented local artists and their captivating digital installations.
What sets LUMINEX apart from other art events is its unique blend of creativity, community engagement, and technological wizardry. Imagine strolling through the vibrant streets of South Park, surrounded by sprawling walls that come alive with mesmerizing visuals, immersive soundscapes, and interactive experiences that spark meaningful conversations and connections among passersby.
For those unfamiliar with LUMINEX’s rich history, let me give you a brief rundown: in 2022, this inaugural exhibition made waves with its debut showcase of international artists and local talents. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, attracting over 40,000 attendees combined during the two-year span, along with hundreds of thousands of online impressions.
This year’s iteration promises to be even more spectacular, featuring an expanded platform for artists to share their stories and perspectives.
“We’re thrilled to take LUMINEX to new heights,” says Carmen Zella, Founder & Chief Curator of NOW Art. “As we continue to grow this important art and technology experience, we’ve pivoted based on the financial structure and development required to host a project of this scale. We look forward to showcasing the artists who are already engaged in production, and giving them additional time to develop their work.”
This biennial event will now take place every two years, allowing for an even more refined and immersive experience. The expanded scope will enable NOW Art to invite more diverse and talented artists, further cementing LUMINEX’s reputation as a premier cultural destination.
