If you’re a fan of How to Train Your Dragon, then buckle up, because the franchise is soaring into a whole new direction with a live-action reimagining of the film that started it all. And honestly? I’m here for it.

Coming from the brilliant Dean DeBlois—who not only directed the original trilogy but also racked up three Oscar nominations for his work—this live-action How to Train Your Dragon promises to be a visual spectacle like no other. For anyone who grew up with the animated series, the news that the world of Berk and its beloved dragons is being brought to life in such a groundbreaking way is honestly kind of surreal.

For those unfamiliar with the story, it takes place on the rugged Viking isle of Berk, where dragons and Vikings have been locked in a bitter feud for generations. Enter Hiccup, the underdog son of Chief Stoick, who defies all expectations when he befriends a rare and dangerous dragon named Toothless. Together, they forge a bond that challenges everything Hiccup knows about the world, dragons, and the very nature of what it means to be a hero.

Now, in the live-action version, Mason Thames (of The Black Phone fame) steps into Hiccup’s shoes, with the legendary Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick. So, we’re already off to a good start with a killer cast. The talented Nico Parker, who you might recognize from The Last of Us, plays Astrid, the fierce and determined Viking warrior, while Nick Frost is back as Gobber, the quirky blacksmith, ensuring that the humor we loved in the animated version stays front and center.

But what really has me hyped about this film is how DeBlois is using cutting-edge visual effects to bring Toothless and the world of dragons to life in a way that feels so immersive and real. This isn’t just another live-action remake—it’s a chance to experience the magic and adventure of the How to Train Your Dragon saga in a completely new way. I mean, can you imagine the thrill of seeing those epic dragon flights in IMAX? I’m already planning my theater trip.

Beyond just the visuals, though, I’m excited to see how this adaptation expands on the original themes of friendship, courage, and leadership. Hiccup’s journey has always been about challenging the norms and finding a new way forward, and it looks like that message will hit even harder in this live-action version, especially as an ancient new threat looms over the world of Vikings and dragons.

If the trailer is any indication, this reimagining will have the same heart and soul as the animated classic, and I’m honestly counting down the days until we can finally see it. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original films or a newcomer to Berk, this is shaping up to be one epic ride.

So, dragon fans, get ready. Hiccup and Toothless are back, and they’re ready to take us on the adventure of a lifetime—just this time, with a whole lot more CGI magic. Trust me, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Only in theaters June 13, 2025.

Will you be going to see this opening weekend? I plan to.
