Learning who you are is process for everyone that progresses at different speeds. Some of us realize at a young age we don’t fit into the boxes that society says we should. Others realize this decades later. Sometimes those kids (or adults) never express who they really are because of how society treats those who are “different” than the norm.

Supporting trans and non-binary siblings is one of the most powerful things a person can do. Family support (or lack there of) is often one of the larges driving factors in a person’s life. It affects their entire journey from birth to the grave. Knowing that someone is one your side can help make life so much more meaningful and bearable even in the toughest of circumstances.

“Sam Is My Sister” talks about accepting who our siblings are and supporting them in positive ways as they learn to express who they are on the inside via external actions. The book about gender nonconformity and sibling relationships was written for children between 4 and 8 years old, but can speak to those outside that age range as well.

Evan loves being big brother to Sam and Finn. They do everything together—go fishing, climb trees, and play astronauts. But lately, Evan notices that he and Sam don’t look like brothers anymore. Sam wants to have long hair, and even asks to wear a dress on the first day of school. As time goes by, Evan comes to understand why Sam wants to look like a girl—because Sam is a girl.

Sam is transgender. And just like always, Sam loves to dream with Evan and Finn about going to the moon together. Based on one family’s real-life experiences, this heartwarming story of a girl named Sam and the brothers who love and support her will resonate with readers everywhere.
