Molly’s not like other girls… she wants a monster under her bed!
Molly & Nightmare is the story of a girl who turns an imaginary monster into a real friend…and of a monster who learns that he’s more than a menace under a bed.
She’s lonely at school, so she decides to bring a friend. A big friend. A big, scary friend. She summons a monster called Nightmare, who tries his hardest to scare her—but he just can’t! Nightmare doesn’t understand why Molly is not frightened of him…but soon Molly and Nightmare become great friends, and go on many adventures together. And he promises to protect her from the things that do scare her, like loneliness and snapping turtles.
– POW Kids Books
I read this book for the first while in the school pickup line waiting for the oldest to get out of school. The youngest and I sometimes show up early, put the car in park, and read a few stories while we wait for older brother. It isn’t uncommon for me to read a children’s book for the first time like this without previewing it.
Molly and Nightmare, however, made me question this practice. The story is magnificent. Don’t get me wrong. I loved it. I, and my wife, however were not prepared for the contents of the story. We both cried. A couple of times.
Trigger/Spoiler Warning… There is a death in the book. One that took both parents reading this book to their Kindergartner completely by surprise. The book is more of a circle of life kind of story than a feel good smiles kind of story. Know this going in and you’ll enjoy it.
