I’m starting to get a little jumpy. Abigail’s due date is just a week away. 39 weeks today. Every little noise makes me jump now. When she tries to move from one position to another and makes an uncomfortable noise my attention is instantly pulled from whatever it is I’m focusing on to her. I think she’s getting sick of hearing me ask “Are you okay?” She often responds with an “I’m fine. I’ll tell you if I’m not.” I then often ask ” How can I help?” and she asks if I can just “Take the baby for a while.” We then both laugh. Once she has the kid I’ll be able to take him when she asks, but not until then.
I can only imagine what it must be like to not be able to move around like she used to. That baby bump is in the way after all! No longer is it a simple thing for her to take her shoes off or bend over to pick up something she’s dropped. I try and help where I can but it is obvious she is uncomfortable. She’s generally pleasant about it. There have been a few moments of “I’m ready to have this baby already!” Not too many though.
I’ve been in a DEAD sleep a couple of times in the last week when Abigail made a noise (even if it was just a sneeze) and I was immediately woken-up. One time I even jumped right out of bed to see if anything was in need of my attention and she had simply been dreaming. People say that first babies are usually late. That doesn’t help me to relax at all right now. They are usually late, but not always.
Our first born was five days late. After 24+ hours of labor (he kept going up with each push instead of down), he finally arrived after cesarean section. My poor wife. Hang in there, Joel!
Glad things worked out for you alright. Thanks for the encouragement! We are honestly hoping he’s born Sunday, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen as of right now.
I remember that anticipation. Our second child is going to be born in a few weeks, but I’m kind of freaking out about this one (I’ve been writing a post about this for like forever). You’re in for a fun ride. Congrats and great post.
Good luck! Babies are fun. My wife thinking she was going to have a baby at 39 weeks, and ending up waiting until week 42 wasn’t much fun, but it’s going to be over soon enough.

My first came exactly on his due date;) Have no fear, he’ll be here when he’s done cooking and he will be perfect, just like his timing. I know you don’t want advice because who really wants advice especially from strangers but I have to say this one thing: the birth is only the beginning of your parenting storry. One of the very first few pages. So no matter how it goes: early/late, easy/difficult, natural/c-section- in the end, if you and your wife and your baby are healthy, call it a success and be OK with that. Move on to the thousands of other pages that will fill your parenting book;)
